A FREAKIN' AWESOME FINALE
In the Cougar Dome, Freakin’ Awesome and Above the Net battled for the Intramural volleyball championship on Tuesday, Nov. 28.
“The teams were equally matched and no one could have predicted who would win,” senior cinema broadcast arts major and Freakin’ Awesome player Chris Yu said. “We were both undefeated and it proved to be a well anticipated match. Above the Net was dominating Tuesday night and we were undefeated on Monday nights.”
The championship game consisted of three games played with rally scoring. Although team Above the Net put together a good fight, Freakin’ Awesome took home the championship with a 2-1 win.
“We came into this game knowing they would be a hard team to beat,” senior journalism major and Freakin’ Awesome player Brianna Schroeter said.
All three games were intense. Both teams worked together to add points in the favor and displayed a lot of talent between the serves, spikes, and digs evident in their rallies.
“We wanted everybody to play. It was a team effort—volleyball is a team sport,” junior communication studies major and Freakin’ Awesome player Jimmy Lundgren said. “I coached it in high school and I played in junior college, so I have some experience and if you don’t have a solid team, you can’t win. One person can’t be the whole team.”
For many of these players, this was not just a game, but also a last chance for the majority of them to play their last Intramural volleyball game.
“Some of us have been together on a team since freshman year,” junior marketing major and Above The Net player Traci Lawson said. “A lot of us are juniors; we have one senior. We’re just all really good friends and love volleyball.”
Although both teams displayed a lot of talent, they took different approaches to preparing for the big game.
“Basically we did a lot of team stuff, and every Sunday, we came to open gym and played against another team,” Lundgren added. “We would just work on our game and help each other out. It was a team effort.”
Both teams never lost track of what the heart of intramural sports is—to have fun.
“[Above The Net] never practiced; we just showed up and played,” Lawson said. “We just have a good time out there. It’s just at lot of fun. All of our friends come out; that’s one reason why I do so well because we have fans cheering for us and we just have a good time.”
Both teams displayed an array of talent that showed throughout the game making it a well earned Freakin’ Awesome victory.
“We have been undefeated since freshman year, but there’s always next year,” Lawson said. “They’re a really good team; I’ve got to hand to them. They have a lot of good guy hitters and the girls are really good so it was a fun game. There’s nothing like a challenging competitive game of volleyball.”
