The men’s soccer team finished their undefeated regular season last Saturday as they defeated Vanguard 2-1.

The men’s soccer team has become the pride of APU students this year with their exciting games and impressive victories. The Cougars are the NAIA’s no. 2 team and have finished their season with 16-0-1, with a 9-0-1 record in the GSAC. This is the best GSAC record for the men’s soccer team under the direction of head coach Phil Wolf.

The Cougars started out the season strong and showed dominance with a 6-0 victory over Northwestern and a 7-0 victory over Dominican. Throughout the season, the Cougars also had some large margin victories, as they defeated San Diego Christian and Hope International with 5-0 scores for both game.

The Cougars are developing a reputation of fighting until the finish. APU had four of their games go into overtime this season, with all but one leading to victory. Unfortunately, the Cougars let their 14-game winning streak slip out of their hands during one of their last games of the regular season, with a 1-1 tie in overtime to Point Loma Nazarene.

“Our goals are always to win GSAC, win the region and then get to nationals. Winning regionals is a very important thing to us,” Wolf said.

The team faced a couple injuries to key players, but the Cougars feel they are well-equipped.

“From the beginning of the season, we’ve known we have a really deep team,” assistant coach Jordan Jones said. “We have a lot of quality players throughout the whole team. So coming down with some injuries, the guys we know have the ability, its time for them to step up.”
