After excellent seasons for both men’s and women’s soccer, the Cougars are ready to show their skills on a national stage.
Men’s soccer traveled to Olathe, Kan. and women’s soccer traveled to Daytona Beach, Fla. to play their respective tournaments.
Men’s soccer brings a 16-1-1 record with their loss and tie coming against GSAC opponents late in the season. No. 1 seed Cougars outscored their opponent in goals, 55 to 9.
Senior forward Steven Lenhart leads the Cougars with 14 goals while junior defender Jared Karkas is the team leader in assists.
The Cougars won their first 14 games of the season with three dramatic overtime victories. The flawless record was broken with a tie against Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego on Oct. 20.
After playing their first game against MidAmerican Nazarene, the Cougars are set to play their quarterfinal game on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 5:00 p.m. The Cougars could face fellow GSAC rival No. 8 seed Fresno Pacific in the quarterfinal game. APU defeated Fresno Pacific in the regular season, 1-0.
If the Cougars reach the semifinals, they will likely play No. 4 seed Ohio Domincan or No. 5 Simon Fraser (B.C.) in the Monday, Nov. 19 match at 3:00 p.m.
The men’s soccer tournament final will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 5:00 p.m.
Women’s soccer finished 17-1-1 this year. Their lone loss was against Lindsey Wilson. The Cougars could face Lindsey Wilson in the semifinal match in the Daytona tournament.
The Cougars were challenged in their regional matches. Calif. State San Marcos took the Cougars to overtime in the semifinal.
Sophomore forward Theresa Broad leads the Cougars in goals with 18 and freshman midfielder Lynsey Domene leads the Cougars in assists with 11.
Women’s soccer was seeded No. 3 in their tournament. The quarterfinal will be held on Nov. 17 at 2:00 p.m.; the semifinal will be held on Nov. 19 at 5:00 p.m; and the final will be held on Nov. 20 at 4:00 p.m.
Both soccer teams have high expectations for the tournament. Men’s soccer has lost in the finals in 2005 and 2006 while women’s soccer lost in last year’s final.
Women’s soccer is looking for their first championship since 1998 while men’s soccer is looking for the first championship in their history.
All of the soccer games will be telecast live on-campus via internet video in the Cougar Dome. Free snacks will be provided.
