The driver foiled to set the emergency brake and the "Jolly Trolley" rolled with Smith.

On Monday, Nov. 12, the green “Jolly Trolley” crashed into the front of Smith Hall, knocking down pieces of the overhang and breaking off chunks of stones that surround the front entrance.
“The trolley driver parked on the west side of Adams and didn’t put the emergency break on,” Deputy Chief of Campus Safety Anthony Strickland said. “The trolley rolled across the street because it is slightly down hill there. It basically collided with Smith Hall, with the overhang.”
The first major concern for Campus Safety was not for the building, but for students.
“We didn’t know if anyone was in the trolley or if people had been sitting outside of Smith Hall. When we got there, we just made sure no one was injured,” Strickland said.
After the incident Campus Safety called Facilities Management to ensure them the area was safe for students and no one could get injured.
“[We] blocked off the area, and they came out to check the overhang to make sure it wasn’t going to fall on any students walking in or out of Smith Hall or on the sidewalk,” Strickland said. “Students weren’t allowed to walk in or out of Smith on Monday.”
Strickland cautioned students to use this instance as a learning tool.
“Things like that happen more often than you would think. Not with trolleys of course, but with regular vehicles when people forget to put their emergency brakes on [their vehicles] they will roll and collide with things,” Strickland said.
At the time of publication the identity of the trolley driver had yet to be released.
