OLIVER KIMOKEO | staff writer

On Tuesday night, The Clause had the opportunity to provide a live game blog of the Biola basketball doubleheader. It was the very first time The Clause was able to provide the readership with live reports of an event.

ports journalism has progressed through the years. Information is now readily available due to an advancement of technology. I remember the days when you had to wait for the next day’s newspaper to find out the score of the game. Nowadays, you can find out the score through a variety of ways including the Internet, mobile phone alerts, and television bugs.

Through this growth of sports information, new ideas are being created. One trend that has gained popularity in sports journalism in the last year is the live game blog. Instead of waiting for the end of the game to get analysis from your favorite sportswriter, you are able to follow the game with running commentary.

The live game blog is really awesome and I wanted to publish one for The Clause. The Biola doubleheader was the perfect time to do it. It is the biggest game of the year for the APU community and it is a vital game in the GSAC schedule.

Before the evening arrived, I was anticipating how the live game blog will be done in a practical way. I have never done one before and I was nervous about getting writer’s block during the game. But that did not happen. Once the game started, I got into a groove.

I had a surge of adrenaline because I knew that I was breaking the action of the game for the readers online. It was my first time providing live journalism and excitement flowed through my body as a result.

Here at The Clause, editors and staff writers are used to having a substantial amount of time to prepare their articles before typing the words.

With the live game blog, I did not have that comfort zone. Timeliness was a factor and I needed to provide information as fast as possible. It was a change of pace and I loved it.

At the conclusion of the night, I had approximately 75 entries typed and had an average of a new entry every four minutes. I was amazed at how much I wrote in less than five hours. I typed over 3000 words which is about four times longer than the standard Clause article.

The live game blog was a combination of standard reporting of the action of the game and instant analysis of certain moments of the game. I have seen a lot of basketball in my lifetime so I had a lot of confidence in my knowledge of the game. As I was writing the entries, I had a realization of how fast the basketball action actually goes.

It took me about 15 seconds to write a sentence; in basketball time, it could equal the amount of time a team needs to go across the court.

Nonetheless, I had a fantastic time doing a live game blog. The Clause may be doing more live game blogs this semester for basketball and baseball.

Since it’s a special edition to our usual coverage, it is best to reserve the live game blog for those truly special games. Please let us know if you enjoyed the live game blog.
