Last Thursday night, women joined together at UTCC in honor of Women’s History Month to reflect on where women have been and where they are going. The Coffeehouse event’s theme was “Through the Eyes of a Woman” in order to honor and celebrate the beauty of women and how they have viewed the world
throughout history. The event began by showing a slide show of many different women who have made a difference in history. Following the slideshow were art performances including song, poetry and dance. “It was really cool having all the females able to come together and express ourselves in different
ways,” freshman social work major Kirsten John said. John enjoyed the different performances, which emphasized women’s creativity, and talents as they expressed themselves by singing, reciting, and dancing onstage at the UTCC. She performed as well. Melanie Wolf, Associate Facilitator of D-Group Ministries, was the guest speaker for the Coffeehouse. Wolf shared her hope that they even would encourage women to “seek the truth about who they are as women, and who the Creator has made them to be.”
The Coffeehouse was planned so that women recognize their importance in history as well as their importance today. Wolf explained that women need to realize they are valuable because they are created by God.
“You all are women of prayer, who know the truth in order to be empowering and be empowered by others,” Wolf said. Wolf wanted the women in the audience to believe that God has empowered them to touch the world and encourage each other with their passions and talents. “The purpose of this event is to show women that we are unique and have been through many things in history that have brought us to where we are now,” graduate student and Coffeehouse coordinator Katie Peterson said.
Peterson continued to explain that one of the goals in organizing this event was to raise awareness among the students who attended the Coffeehouse and remind them of what women have done throughout history to earn the rights they have now.
The Coffeehouse was well attended and Peterson said the night went smoothly and provided a time of encouragement for women.
